Topsil GlobalWafers A/S
Topsil GlobalWafers A/S is a Danish high-tech company and one of only a handful worldwide with the capability to produce ultra-pure Float Zone silicon (FZ). Its wafers are critical components in power electronics, renewable energy, quantum technologies, aerospace, medical devices, and defense. From its base in Frederikssund, Topsil has built a unique position as a global supplier to industries that drive both the green transition and technological innovation.
EIFO
In 2025, Topsil took a decisive step forward when 1st Mile secured DKK 103 million in funding from EIFO’s Investment Scheme for Green Industrial Production.
The grant enables a ~DKK 700 million expansion project in Frederikssund, establishing the world’s most advanced factory for ultra-pure FZ silicon. This factory will be a cornerstone of global supply chains.
The purpose of the project is to expand Topsil’s Silicon Road site in Frederikssund with a new facility, increasing annual FZ silicon production capacity. The expansion is designed to meet rapidly growing global demand for high-purity wafers used in power electronics and green technologies.
Strategically, the project is fully aligned with Denmark’s green industrial goals, with the EU’s ambitions for technology sovereignty, and with the global RE100 initiative. By anchoring production in Denmark, the factory will strengthen European resilience, reduce dependency on non-European suppliers, and secure Topsil’s role as a global epicenter of high-purity semiconductor production.
1st Mile’s work
1st Mile managed the EIFO application by shaping the grant strategy, preparing financial models and risk assessments, conducting market analyses and execution planning, and aligning partners and stakeholders. The result ensures that Topsil’s expansion strengthens not only the company, but also Denmark and Europe’s resilience in critical supply chains.
EUDP
Prior to the EIFO grant, in 2024, 1st Mile secured DKK 44.2 million from the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), for Topsil’s the FZ300 project to develop the world’s first ultra-pure 300 mm FZ silicon wafers in 2025-2028 – a big step in future-proofing Europe’s energy technology supply chain.
The transition from 200 mm to 300 mm wafer diameter will allow to increase production efficiency and reduce emissions, making power semiconductors more cost-effective and sustainable. These components are vital enablers of the green transition.
The project will develop and demonstrate a new R&D crystal growth machine capable of producing ultra-pure 300 mm FZ silicon crystals – something that was never before achieved. The work builds on six decades of engineering experience at Topsil, combined with advanced process simulations conducted by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
This breakthrough project is expected to secure Danish and European leadership in strategic semiconductor production for the energy sector.
Success through collaboration
This success was made possible by a close and constructive collaboration with Topsil, whose clear vision and dedicated team helped transform a complex case into a winning application.
