A major win: DKK 180 million for Molslinjen’s green transition

Molslinjen’s electrification of the Kattegat route has just taken a major step forward: their project has been awarded DKK 180 million in investment support under Denmark’s Investment Support Scheme for CO₂-Intensive Companies (Investeringsstøtte til CO₂-intensive virksomheder).

The grant helps finance the replacement of three MGO-fuelled high-speed catamarans with three new battery-electric vessels on the Aarhus–Odden route. When all ferries are in operation, the route is expected to cut emissions by around 132,000 tonnes CO₂-eq per year, while keeping the 90-minute crossing time and increasing capacity to approximately 1,500 passengers and 500 cars per vessel.

Behind those numbers lies a demanding technical and financial challenge. Each vessel will carry battery capacity on the order of 1,000 electric cars and must be able to charge in roughly half an hour at every port call. For a company operating one of Denmark’s most CO₂-intensive transport links, moving to fully electric high-speed ferries is a bold and capital-intensive decision – exactly the kind of step the scheme is designed to support.

1st Mile has worked with Molslinjen to bring this case from concept to approved application. A DKK 180 million commitment to a single project is a clear signal of confidence in both the technology and the quality of the case.
