What is MUDP?

The Environmental Technology Development and Demonstration Program (MUDP) is Denmark’s national grant program for supporting companies developing and demonstrating future environmental technologies. It is managed by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency under the Ministry of Environment, with strategic direction set by an independent board.

Since 2008, MUDP has supported over 760 projects with more than DKK 1.4 billion in funding, helping Denmark meet national and global environmental goals while driving innovation, exports, and job creation.

Who can apply?

MUDP is open to companies, research institutions, and public authorities based in Denmark. Technology-developing companies should play a central role in the project. Cross-sectoral collaboration and innovation partnerships are strongly encouraged, especially for larger or more strategic projects.

What kind of projects are supported?

MUDP supports a wide range of environmental technology projects, from feasibility studies and prototype development to full-scale demonstrations. Funding can cover:

  • Development and testing of new environmental technologies
  • Full-scale demonstration projects
  • Environmental Technology Verification (ETV)
  • Innovation partnerships and international collaboration

Technologies should address key environmental challenges in areas such as clean water (e.g. wastewater, groundwater, industrial water use), clean air (e.g. particulate emissions, greenhouse gases), hazardous substances (e.g. phasing out problematic chemicals), climate adaptation (e.g. solutions to manage drought, flooding), resource efficiency and circular economy, biodiversity protection, or environmental digitalisation.

How does the MUDP application process work?

Applications are evaluated in rounds, with deadlines spread throughout the year depending on the project type. In 2025, DKK 135 million will be distributed across three funding tracks:

  • DKK 8 million for pre-projects and ETV (deadline: 9 April)

  • DKK 63.5 million for development, testing, and demonstration (deadline: 14 May)

  • DKK 63.5 million for large-scale flagship projects (deadline: 27 August)

All applicants are encouraged to read MUDP’s 2024–2027 Strategy and 2025 Action Plan before applying.

What are the evaluation criteria?

The MUDP board assesses applications based on:

  • The environmental impact and relevance of the technology
  • Commercial potential, market readiness, and scalability
  • Innovation level, risk profile, and technical feasibility
  • Competence and composition of the project team
  • Showcase value for full-scale demonstration projects

Projects must show how they contribute to solving environmental challenges without creating new ones. Holistic, systemic thinking is encouraged.
